KFC already uses self-service kiosks in France

Fast-food chain KFC is introducing self-service kiosks at its New Zealand stores within the next year.

A branch of KFC on Auckland’s North Shore will be the first to get the touch-screen terminals, which have been used successfully in France for a number of years, Russel Creedy, chief executive of KFC’s parent company Restaurant Brands, told the New Zealand Herald.

Customers order their food at the kiosk, then pick it up at a dedicated counter.

Mr Creedy said restaurants with kiosks often became busier, meaning the technology would not result in stores being run with fewer staff.

"If anything, you tend to increase staff because you get more customers through the door."

The self-service kiosks allow customers to spend more time choosing their food, he said.

Customers will still have the option of ordering from a staff member.
