Combat rising food prices with these simple tips:

Shop smart. Stay away from pre-packaged salads and fruits. Go to your local farmer's market and buy loose items that are in season.

Analyse your grocery bill and identify the money wasters. They tend to be soft drinks, chips, sugary biscuits and candy. Yes, you can live without them.

Make your own sauces. Pasta and curry sauces can be costly, not to mention packed with sugar and artificial colours and flavours. Once you start making your own, you'll never go back.

Opt for supermarket brand products. These days, supermarket brands offer a wide range of products from bread, eggs and milk to cleaning and personal items — all at good quality. Give them a go.

Grow your own
If you have a decent sized patch of dirt in your garden, start growing your own vegies. Start simple with easy to grow foods like herbs, rocket and string beans.

Save more money on food costs:

Keep cleaning products to basic minimum... baking soda, vinegar, washing soda, sugar soap. Baking soda is better than Jif for cleaning soap scum off the shower. Vinegar is great as a surface cleaner, rinse aid, fabric and water softener. You can even make your own laudry liquid and stain remover - 12L (yes Litres) for less than $5, using sunlight soap and washing soda. Sugar soap dilution is great to remove grease and can be used as a surface cleaner. Get off the commercialism bandwagon and get back to basics
this was really helpful. i saved $30 in one grocery shop THANKYOU
Making a shopping list of items you require and sticking to it, making price comparisons between product manufacturers and not going grocery shopping on a empty stomach helps. You a more tempted to make those impulse product grabs which increases your grocerie bill. Growing your own is beneficial, as these are items you can definitely save on both from the supermarket and the market place. I definitely agree with the rest of the helpful tips, too often I hear people complain of their high grocery bill, and yet they have expensive taste buds. You can still create those extravagant recipes using supermarket brands at a lower cost, you just need to be willing to try and be open minded!
